KidsConnect At Home
(January 10)

"DIG DEEPER" ACTIVITIES

MATERIALS NEEDED:
The Parent Guide page printed, scrap paper, pencil/pen/marker, a bowl, a Bible or Bible App.

WHAT YOU DO:
Open/download/print the PARENT GUIDE.

Gather your family together where you can watch the Bible video and you have room to do the activities.

WHAT YOU SAY:
Our January Life App is "Responsibility: showing you can be trusted with what is expected of you".

A life app is something that God wants to do IN you to change the world AROUND you. And by keeping our focus on Jesus this month, we will begin to realize how that can help us bring hope, peace, joy, and love to ourselves and others!
WHAT YOU DO:
If you have a Bible, open it to Luke 12:13-21
, or pull it up on a Bible App. Help kids find where the passage is located.

WHAT YOU SAY:

In any board or card game, you’ve got to follow the rules. You’ve got to play in a responsible way. That’s true about life, too. In fact, that’s what we’re talking about this month—responsibility!

Responsibility is showing you can be trusted with what is expected of you.

All month long we’ll find out how we can follow some simple Rules for Life, and live every day in a responsible way. When we follow Jesus, we have a responsibility to live in a way that honors God and shares God's love with others.

Today's Bible story is a story Jesus told, and it shows us another really important way that we can show responsibility.

Let's take a look at why it's important to share what we have.

APPLYING THE MESSAGE TO OUR LIVES

WHAT YOU SAY:

In Jesus’ story, the rich man had more than he needed. He had enough food to fill up his barns, and he even had the money to build new, BIGGER barns to store more for later.

But to God, this man wasn’t rich at all. To be rich in God’s eyes, a person must treat others the way they want to be treated and put the needs of others before their own. They must be generous with what they have . . . and share it with other people.

We don’t know what happened with the man who first asked Jesus to help him. We don’t know how he reacted after he heard Jesus’ story. Maybe he stopped worrying about getting more of his family’s stuff. Maybe he thought more about sharing what he DID have with his brother.

So, what can WE learn from what Jesus taught that day? (seek responses). Yes, those are all good answers. We can choose to be generous with the things God has given us. We have a responsibility to share God’s gifts with others.

Jesus gave us the perfect example of generosity. He gave His life freely so we could be forgiven. Because of Jesus, God gives us grace and forgives us when we make bad choices. When we understand what Jesus did for us, we should want to be generous to others. We should be willing to share.

Last week, we learned that an important responsibility we have as Christians is to Love God and Love Others. Another great Rule for Life is what we learned today -- to share what we have.

Let’s be honest—that’s not always easy! It can be hard to share your favorite video game or your favorite type of pizza . . . especially when there’s only one piece left. It might also be difficult during this pandemic to remember to pick up some extra groceries when we are at the store -- peanut butter, cereal, canned meat like tuna or chicken -- to donate to the Bethlehem Pantry at the Good Shepherd Ministry Center.

But when we remember what Jesus did for us and just how generous He is, it’s easier to let go and share what we have.

Now, let's do a KidsConnect activity to connect with today's Bible message.

CONNECT WITH OTHERS
Take a photo of your family doing one of the activities and post it to our private Facebook group @ Foothills Family Ministries or ask Ms. Lisa to share it lisastewart@foothillsumc.org. Seeing pictures of other KidsConnect families doing the activities will hopefully help us feel connected during this time of physical isolation!
